In today’s world, IP is as ubiquitous as the air we breathe – it’s in our mobile devices, the movies we watch, the music we listen to, it’s even in these words that you’re reading right now. Whether it comes in the form of patents, copyright, trademarks, confidential information, or any of its other myriad guises, there is no escaping the fact that IP is everywhere. And yet, despite its importance, too few beyond the cloistered ranks of lawyers and IP practitioners can speak with real confidence about what IP actually is, never mind what it’s actually good for.
Inevitably, many businesses – veterans and greenhorns, mom and pop stores to multinational conglomerates alike – have been burnt by a failure to grasp what IP really is. At best, this failure to master IP manifests in a loss in potential revenue; at worst, your business gets slapped with a potential lawsuit.
“Innovation is Creativity with a job to do” – John Emmerling
The IPA Beacon was therefore conceived as a lighthouse to guide businesses in navigating the often turbulent and murky waters of IP. It is my hope that the IPA Beacon will successfully bridge the gap between education and application, and help businesses not only to understand what IP is, but to competently wield it as a tool for commercial success. In other words, it’s time to put Creativity to task for the job it was paid to do!
To that end, my Editorial team at the Beacon have put together a stellar first issue that we hope you will find insightful and engaging: “Articles” is our flagship article, contributed by one of our esteemed speakers, Professor Daniel Gervais, on the impact of disruptive technologies; “IP Commentaries” highlights the latest developments in IP cases and IP law; “IP Management Case Studies” presents real-world case studies of businesses that have successfully leveraged on IP for commercial benefit, contributed by our partner organisation, Altiply Pte Ltd; and “Happenings @ IPA” keeps you abreast of the latest and greatest at IPA.
On this occasion as we celebrate World IP Day 2015, it gives me great pleasure to present to you the inaugural issue of The IPA Beacon. I hope you derive as much enjoyment reading it as we did in putting this together.
